TWO-SERVER CONFIGURATION (Recommended)

If Client hosts CTMS

There are many different ways of licensing  Microsoft Servers, and the actual licensing requirements would be determined based on your existing infrastructure and licensing agreements with Microsoft. Generally speaking, however, you will need to license the following products: 

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit OS (or higher)

• You must purchase a base OS license for each machine, plus client access licenses for each internal user.  You may also need an external connector license if you have any external users (not affiliated with your company) accessing the CTMS. 
• We recommend that you purchase Software Assurance for SQL Server, but the level of SA you purchase is based on your existing contracts with Microsoft. 

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition (or higher)

• The Standard Edition of SQL Server is limited to 4 physical CPUs, but each CPU can be multi-core at no additional cost.  Typically we recommend 1 or 2 quad-core CPUs, with 16GB of RAM on each server.  SQL Editions such as Enterprise or Data Center include additional features which are not required by CTMS. 
• Microsoft recommends that you purchase Per-Processor licensing for SQL Server for external-facing websites.  Per-Processor licensing allows you to have an unlimited number of  users connecting to the database from either inside or outside of your firewall. 
• We recommend that you purchase Software Assurance for SQL Server, but the level of SA you purchase is based on your existing contracts with Microsoft.

Services Provided

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Workgroup Implementation and Management Services Includes 1 Processor License: MS SQL software and 1 database instance (Production) including monitoring services.
Managed Server Support: Server, Database and Network monitoring, Network equipment, OS Patch Applications and Change Management.

We recommend a two-server configuration (WEB and SQL machines), which would require 2 64-BIT OS licenses plus 1 SQL Server license.  Smaller installations (i.e. less than 25 users) can operate on a combined single-server configuration.  We also support virtualized environments.
